By far, Bardia National Park is the most popular go-to destination for watching tigers in Nepal. It lies in the far-western and southern part of lowlands also known as the Terai. The conservation history of Nepal suggests that the park was initially maintained as private hunting reserve by Ranas to entertain themselves and their visiting Royalties from princely states of India. In 1976 it was gazetted as the Karnali Wildlife Reserve, which was renamed as the Bardia Wildlife Reserve in 1982. The reserve was given the status of a national park in 1988.
It covers an area of 968 square kilometers and it is home to several mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians including Bengal tigers, Asian elephants, Swamp deer, Blackbucks, Blue bull and Common leopards. Bardia National Park is still less touristy and undisturbed. Vegetation found in Bardia National Park are Sal forests, riverine forests and grasslands.
Tiger Watching Tour in Bardia focuses mainly in finding Bengal tigers, Common leopards, Asian elephants, Blue Bulls and Swamp deer. The trip starts with a flight to Nepalgunuj. It takes another couple of hours to reach Thakurdwara, the gateway to Bardia National Park.
