The pilgrimage to Amarnath Cave is one of the most sacred for Hindu adherents. The cave is situated at the elevation of 3,888m (12,752ft) and it houses the highly revered Ice Shiva Lingam that symbolizes the mythical power of Lord Shiva. Amarnath is combination of two Words-Amar (immortal) and Nath (lord). So, literally Amarnath means the Lord of Immortality. It is believed that the Amarnath Cave is the place where Lord Shiva revealed the secret of life and death (Amar Katha) to his beloved consort Mata Parvati upon her request. The legend says that during the time while Lord Shiva was narrating the Amar Katha, there was no living being in the cave to listen, except an unhatched egg. During the time the egg hatched and the new born became immortal after listening the story. The cave is about 80m high and wide tucked on a huge mountain cliff and it is believed to be about 5000 years old. Inside the cave, there is a self-shaped Ice Shiva Lingam of Lord Amarnath and other ice formations to represent Mata Parvati and Lord Ganesh. It is believing that this natural Ice Linga grows and shrink with the phases of the moon and reach its height and starts the annual festival. The Amarnath Shrine Board announces the date for the pilgrimage and manages all support.
